What is VCM, and why do I want to disable it?
VCM, or Variable Cylinder Management, is a technology used by Honda motor company to “intelligently” disable some of the cylinders from your V6 3.5L SOHC engine and “improve” fuel efficiency and lower emissions. While it can achieve those goals, it comes at the cost of causing unwarranted damage to your engine and spark plugs. The seals in the engine wear down, and oil slowly leaks into your combustion chamber and prematurely destroys the plugs.
In 2013, Honda agreed to settle a class action lawsuit including the Accord (2008-12), Odyssey (2008-13), Pilot (2009-13) and Crosstour (2010-13) models equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 with Variable Cylinder Management. They all suffered from engine misfire, excessive oil burning and premature spark plug fouling issues.
What does Smart ECO VCM do?
Before VCM is allowed to engage and ECO mode is turned on, certain parameters must be met by the computer in your car - one of which is engine temperature. Once the computer detects the engine has reached approximately 167 degrees F, it permits the use of VCM and ECO mode.
The AST Smart ECO VCM module plugs inline between your computer and Engine Coolant Temperature sensor to adjust the temperature it reads. It modifies the ECT value and adjusts it slightly lower, helping to prevent ECO mode from coming on - KEEPING your car running on all 6 cylinders, improving throttle response, eliminating engine shutter and saving your spark plugs / engine from premature wear!
